John Parker Motorcycles was founded in 1973 in Southend, Essex. It's a well known and loved local brand, so we were very excited to be asked to update the brand with a new logo and website!
The brief was to create a modern 'funky' looking logo with a vintage, retro twist that looked back to the classic motorcycle logos of the early 20th century.
Once the branding was complete with moved on to create a new website that showcased the new brand, and also worked to sell the companies motorcycle products and services. We developed an e-commerce shop and added pages to promote the MOT, workshop and servicing aspects of the business.
An SEO campaign followed to help boost the Google search ranking of the website.

Making a website that is both W3C AA accessible and also uses the latest browser technology is no mean feat. Add to that a cutting-edge modern design and it becomes harder still.
This was the brief set by Essex Outdoors and Essex County Council when we won the contract to develop a new website for www.essexoutdoors.com. They wanted a website that would appeal to teachers, head teachers, youth leaders, parents and students alike, a website that would allow Essex Outdoors to market their services in a clean and modern way using all the latest web technologies.
As a council funded business, they also had a duty to make the website accessible to all types of users; the site had to adhere to the W3C accessibility guidelines up to the AA level. These guidelines can be daunting and incredibly in-depth, fully accessible websites are also not known for being visually interesting. The challenge was to create something that satisfied both these requirements.
Phuse Media delivered a website that surpassed all the expectations of both Essex Outdoors and Essex County Council. The website is a showcase for how you can incorporate all the latest technologies, create a visually stunning website, adhere to the accessibility guidelines and give all visitors a user experience of the highest order.
The above image show the website's accessibility score on SiteImprove
Phuse Media have been the perfect choice as partners for our new website. From start to finish they have been professional, innovative & responsive, helping to refine and improve our original brief and accommodating our constant additional requirements! We couldn’t be happier with the final product, and would have no hesitation in recommending Phuse to other businesses and organisations.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a new regulation designed to protect the data of EU citizens and EU residents both residing in the EU and around the world. Simply put, it is legislation that tells businesses that if they offer their products or services to EU citizens they must look after their data or face some pretty severe consequences. How does being fined 4% of your total global revenue sound? Not good. The new regulations come into force on 25th May 2018.
The GDPR is likely to affect the majority of businesses trading today, regardless of size or industry. If you collect or process any personal data, you will be required to comply in accordance with the new legislation. This includes companies that use internal databases, apps, CRMS or even good old email to store the personal data.
If you are looking for a little light (and yes, there is some sarcasm there) bedtime reading, the GDPR website makes for some interesting reading. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the things you can do to your website to ensure you are compliant.
Consent is a huge part of the GDPR. If somebody makes an enquiry through your website of any kind, that means you can no longer automatically add them to your mailing list. It also means you can’t pre-populate any checkboxes when they send you a query that they have to untick if they don’t want to be added to your mailing list. Consent can also be withdrawn by data subjects at any time.
And to make matters more complicated, consent doesn’t just apply after the GDPR comes into effect. You will need to prove that the people on your existing contacts or mailing lists have given their consent for their data to be gathered. For example, can you prove that everybody you send your newsletter out to has requested this information?
An easy way to prove this and keep consent on record is to send an email out to all contacts asking them to opt-in or opt-out of your mailing list. Sure, you may lose some subscribers along the way, but the main thing is that you are acting in compliance with GDPR and protecting your reputation and bottom line.
Making Your Website Compliant
If all this talk of fines and compliance is getting you a little hot under the collar, the good news is that with a little organisation and understanding of the rules, you can get your website compliant in no time.
Start with a personal data audit across the data that you currently hold on your users and customers. What are you using the data for, do you still need the data and where is it being stored? This will help you to define which data you still need to keep and which can be archived or deleted.
Start to work your way through the following steps. These are some of basic considerations that will apply to most websites:
GDPR isn’t that scary once you get to grips with what you need to do to comply with the new guidelines. If you would like help with your website, get in touch. We can carry out a full data and website audit and make recommendations for improvements.
It’s a rare thing for Google to reveal any of its search ranking factors, which is why we really sat up and took notice last year when they revealed they would reward sites that used SSL (secure sockets layer) certificates by boosting their search results.
An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that is used to encrypt sensitive information and authenticate a website’s identity. This level of encryption prevents information such as credit card details, addresses or passwords from being intercepted by anybody other than the intended recipient.
SSL certificates use HTTPS encryption; a protocol that protects the privacy and integrity of exchanged data between a user and the site they are visiting. In the same day that a key locks and unlocks a door, SSL certificates apply the same type of system to authenticate and protect confidential information.
Putting this type of security in place can be tricky, but the payoff is certainly worth it in terms of advanced security, enhanced referral data and a promised boost in rankings. There is also the issue of compliance to consider, but more on this in a moment.
In recent years, there has been a big debate over how important SSL certificates are, and whether they are a requirement on every website. Google has always had the end user experience in mind and by putting SSL certificates in place, webmasters can help to ensure this experience is as safe and secure as possible.
As we have already touched on, the main benefit of Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is to provide a secure connection between users and the page they are viewing or sharing personal data to. You will often see the https:// prefix when you visit secure shopping websites or when you are doing your online banking. HTTPS offers an additional layer of protection, essential when you are sharing credit card or personal address details.
In order to deploy HTTPS on your website, you’ll need an SSL certificate. This SSL certificate will be unique to your business and operates as a padlock between a browser (your users) and your web server (your website). You will also need to create a certificate signing request (CSR) on your server. This creates a private and public key pair that is used between endpoints (user and website) to validate and protect information in transit.
On 25th May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force. The new regulations will require personal and sensitive data to be encrypted both in transit and in storage. By installing SSL on your website, you will be on your way to GDPR compliance.
If you would like to find out more about installing SSL certificates on your website and discovering the search rankings and compliance benefits this level of security has to offer, get in touch with our team today. We can take care of the entire process for you.
With all the interest around Facebook data breach and how they track you through your browser, its worth pointing out that you can easily turn off this advert tracking through your smart phone and web browser settings.
Facebook doesn't actually track your browsing history, this is in fact caused by the websites you visit.
These sites are using re-marketing advertising to try and get you to come back and complete the initial purchase enquiry. Once visited they add you to a list that is then used by Facebook to advertise to you on their platform.
Some people find this useful but if you don't you can easily change your smart phone and browser settings.

The world is a connected place, and while it can be daunting knowing how to market your business in the digital age, there really are only a handful of tools and resources you should be focusing on. Instagram is one of them.
You may already be using Instagram to share photos and videos with friends and family - it’s a great way to show what you are up to visually and at the touch of a button. It’s also highly interactive. Whether you are a creative agency, in the construction business or offering financial services, there are ways that you can leverage the sharing power of Instagram for your business.
Instagram is a great way to show off the products and solutions you have to offer. No matter what offering you have for your customers, this social media platform will allow you to show it off in a visually appealing way - by the way, visual information is delivered to the brain faster than any other form of advertising.
It’s important not to underestimate the power of social media marketing. While insurance or financial services may be difficult to make look pretty, there are ways that you can deliver visuals that will boost your appeal and make your business more memorable. Instead of showing corporate images, calculators or pound signs, think about the solution you offer to your customers, your mission and ultimately how you can make the lives of your customers better. Colourful images of happy families, personal assets, travel destinations and photos that illustrate stability, comfort and confidence are all great choices here.
You can follow us by visiting our page on Instagram.
Instagram is so much more than a way to display photos. Instagram Stories allow you to display your photos in a slideshow format that tells a story about who you are, your products or a particular promotion you have running. You can also use video to tell your story and include hashtags that make it easy for you to link your stories to other photos you have posted or other Instagram accounts.
In a world where competition is fierce and customers are curious about the brands they use, giving a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes could be a winning move for your business. Perhaps you sell environmentally friendly products or maybe you are opening a new branch. Why not give your customers an exclusive look at how your products or made or the people who make your business tick?
All of those pictographic posts may look beautiful, but they also need to do some serious work for you if you want your efforts to pay off. The good news is that Instagram, when used well, can command crazy levels of engagement. In fact, a recent report by Forrester revealed that content posted to Instagram generates 120 times more engagement than Twitter and 58 times more than Facebook.
If you’d like to find out more about the power of Instagram or any aspect of social media marketing, we’d love to help. Give us a call on 01702 482011. It could be the making of your business.

We recently encountered a situation where a key page of a client’s website simply disappeared from the Google search index. One day it was there in first position on page one of Google next day it was gone!
The first step you might well think would be to panic and that’s pretty much a natural reaction to this kind of occurrence, after all in the modern ultra competitive online market place losing your websites ranking even by a few places can have a financial effect on the business.
We are dealing with systems with rules here not magic so following some straightforward steps to deal with the problem and put in place a solution should be the order of the day.
As a Webmaster your first thought might be to just go straight to Google Webmaster Tools and re-submit the site to the search index. Good idea, but if the page has an issue that you are unaware this might not work. The best plan would be to spend a little time investigating and try and deduce what has happened to the page.
Hopefully these series of checks should help you identify the problem and get the website or web page back in Google search where it belongs.
It might seem obvious but it’s always good to cross off the obvious steps before moving on to the more complex ones. The first thing to do is to check to see if the page or website in question is still live; that any page or pages haven’t been accidently deleted or hidden through a setting in the CMS.
Just surf to the web page or website in question to check this. I did and the page was still there, first check crossed off the list.
In this scenario we are talking about one web page of a website not an entire website, but the steps taken should be the same.
The first step I took was to identify if the other pages of the site where ranking or had also disappeared from the search index. You can do this by typing the following into the Google search field:
Site:[your domain url].
From this I ascertained that the rest of the website was there it was just the one page at this stage that was missing.
I also discovered from my tests and searches through Google that the web page hadn’t just dropped down a few places or a page or two in the search rankings it had completely disappeared from the Google search index.
As a good webmaster you would be using Google Webmaster Tools, a great tool supplied by Google to help you manage your website in their search index.
There are a number of things to check in Webmaster Tools.
Manual Actions - Check here to see if there have been any manual spam submissions of your web page.
Remove URLs - You can also check here to make sure the page hasn’t been added as a removal request whether on purpose or by accident.
Crawl errors - Check here to see if any crawl errors have been reported.
Robots.txt tester - This is an important one to check. This feature of Webmaster Tools allows you to check the robots.txt for your website, making sure that page has not been set to be disallowed which means the Googlebot won’t index it. You can also use the Googlebot test feature located at the bottom of this page.
Fetch as Google - You can also use this tool to test the pages and also if necessary re-submit the page to the Google search index. In Webmaster Tools go to 'Crawl > Fetch as Google' and then enter the url of the page to see what Google makes of that page, see image below.
From all these checks I discovered no issues with the page!
This can be a tricky one to check and it would depend on how familiar you are with the SEO of the website, both on-page and off-page. In my case I had built the website and had been the only SEO person working on the site so I was pretty sure nothing had been done to cause Google to penalise the site.
Another check I made was to see if the page had been copied or ‘plagiarised’. If it had then it might have been penalised by Google, unlikely but worth a check.
This might have happened for a number of reasons; the page content might have been used elsewhere on the client’s website therefore duplicating the content something Google doesn’t like as we know. Someone might have taken the content and used it on their own website, or the site might have been cloned and an entire copy of the site might be running somewhere on the web! I have actually experienced this last one but that is a story for another blog post.
There are some free online tools you can use to check this including: http://www.quetext.com/ or https://searchenginereports.net/plagiarism-checker/
It’s worth checking to see if the site or web page appears in other search engines, run a search through Bing www.bing.com to see if the page appears. If it does then it’s a Google search specific issue.
Another check would be to see if the web server that hosts the website restarted recently. It could have been the case that the server restarted at the same time the Google bot was visiting the website. This would mean that the bot records the site or page as missing and its then removed from the Google search index.
Another possible cause was that the page was being found as 404 (Page not found) rather that a 200 (page ok). A long shot but worth checking out, you can use this tool to check the setting of a page: http://tools.seobook.com/server-header-checker/
In my case this wasn’t a problem so I moved on.
After making all these checks I couldn’t find anything wrong with the web page so I decided to re-submit the web page to the Google search index and wait to see if it reappeared. 24 hours later the page was back in position 1 on page 1 of Google as if it had never left!
What caused the disappearance? I can’t say 100% but it may well have been a server outage that caused the page to go missing. A couple of days before I noticed the page missing, the server that hosted the site had restarted after a routine update. It could have just been a horrible coincidence that the server restarted as the Google bot was visiting the page.
As with most things Google we’ll never know 100% what happened but if you follow these logical steps you should be able to find clues as to why and then rectify the problem.

Did you know that audiences are 10 times more likely to engage with your website if you have video content, or that 71% of online marketers say that conversion rates from video outperform any of their other content?
Those are just some of the facts and figures that are making business owners take notice of this marketing phenomenon, and use video in their marketing strategy.
Millions of people in the UK watch online video
When it comes to reaching your target audience, no other marketing format does better than video. YouTube alone reaches more than one billion visitors every month, and in the UK one in three people watch an online video each week, there are also other popular platforms like Vimeo. That might not sound like much at face value, but it equates to 20 million people a week. Imagine having a share of those statistics.
And video isn’t just something for the big companies. More and more small businesses are using video in their marketing campaigns. From fun and memorable explainer videos that use animated characters to tell a story, to whiteboard videos and product videos, there is so much choice available to businesses looking to capitalise on video marketing.
Done in 60 seconds
With video you can say so much more and in less time than you could with a page of written content. And it's more entertaining, too! Your visitors don't want to wade through pages and pages of text, so don't put them through that. You can say more with video in 60 seconds than you ever could with text, so why not put video to work for you? At Phuse Media, we have helped many of our clients to realise the true marketing power of video, and you can see some of our most recent video production work here.
Video engages more senses, and enables you to use more mediums to capture the attention of your visitor. How many ads have you been moved by in the past? How many ads have led you to purchase a product or service? It’s all about understanding your target audience, and delivering a message that they will respond to. What’s more, video is easy to digest and in 60 seconds you can persuade a potential customer to get in touch, find out more, or buy your product.
Reach out to a wider audience
One of the biggest advantages of video marketing is that it gives you the ability to reach a wider audience - millions of people if you want to. The return on investment with video is huge, especially when you consider a video can go viral and gain millions of views in a matter of days. This isn’t rare anymore, and if you use a great idea, you could have a viral phenomenon on your hands.
Longer visits
Another great advantage of using video is that it makes people stick around longer on your website, social media page or YouTube channel. They are also more likely to remember your message because it engaged more of their time and senses. In a few seconds you can get across your wonderful idea, the benefits of your product or the story of your company and really make an impact.
Good for SEO too
Of course, if you are publishing your video on your website, you need to attract people to your website to view it. When used in the right way, video can be a very powerful form of content and make an excellent contribution to your SEO strategies. The result is that more people are able to find your website, and once they are there watch an intriguing and persuasive video that will hopefully convert them into a paying customer.
Want to join the video marketing revolution? Get in touch with Phuse today. We can tell you more about the undeniable power of video, and help you to reach more people than you thought possible.

If you’d rather focus on your core business and let us handle your website updates we would be delighted to assist.
An important part of your brief relates to timings. Whether you’ve just launched a new product or you want to shout about an award you’ve just won, your blog is the perfect platform. What’s more, you can share your blogs with a single click across all of your social media channels.
It keeps content fresh - great for your audience and the search engines
Stale content could be the death of your website, or at least from the perspective of attracting and engaging visitors. When you keep your website regularly updated with useful information, you show you are about your brand, your visitors and giving something away that is of use to them.
In addition to entertaining your visitors, regular content also feeds the search engines helping to boost your search engine rankings.
Most people hate spam email. It interrupts their workflow, clogs up their mailboxes and is generally a pain to deal with. A blog post on the other hand is unobtrusive, ready to be read when there is time and will actually save YOU time and money in the long run. You only have to post your blog to one place and it can be easily shared across your social media channels. People are much more receptive to a message if they believe it was their idea to view it.
Nobody wants to read a blatant sales pitch, but if you write your blog in a clever manner (we’re great at that by the way!), you can persuade your readers without them realising. For example, you might want to offer them free advice about something that you have to offer, or give them an interesting top 10 list of facts. Don’t forget to include a small and unassuming call to action button somewhere on your page to drum up business from your post.
If you’re using social media and a blog together, you could save on your marketing costs significantly. Why? Well, when you write a great blog post and it’s worthy of being shared, your social media communities will be happy to do that for you - for free! Imagine having your blog and subsequently your website visited by more people than you ever imagined. This is a real possibility when you use a blog to your advantage.
So, still thinking you don’t have time for all this, but that you’d like to give it a try? Get in touch. We can give you a cost effective quote for building a simple blog page and arranging regular blog posts that will engage and persuade your target audience.
You can also take a look at our Web Design Portfolio to see the kind of website that we could build for you.
So, you’ve decided you need a website. The only thing is you’re not really sure what you need, how much to budget for or how to get the best from your website. Perhaps you are looking to upgrade or revamp your current website, but you’re not really sure how to get the best returns from your investment.
The good news is you’ve come to the right place! Here at Phuse Media, we offer professional and bespoke website design that will suit the needs of your organisation and your target audience. In short, we give you all the services you need under one roof and the expertise that will ensure you get the best from your website.
Let’s take a look at the more important website considerations and why you can’t afford to ignore them.
This is possibly the most important question and one to get right before you part with any money. Do you really need a website. The answer, for most people looking to make an impression and a profit, is an unequivocal "yes”. A website is going to get your brand or message out to the people that need to see it, enhance your reputation, make you money (if you’re in it for the profits) and give you an online presence - essential in the 21st Century.
The most important thing is to choose a web design agency that understands your needs and goals, and who can establish exactly what you need your website to do, both now and in the future. What you’re looking for here is to get the best return on your investment - when you do you’ll find your website pays for itself in no time at all.
Do you already have branding? Perhaps this is something you also need assistance with. Either way, a good logo and quality branding will help you to stand head and shoulders above your competitors and make it easy for your target audience to find and recognise you. We offer a range of graphic design and branding packages for both online and print use and would be delighted to sit down with you to work through some branding ideas.
We’ve seen some shocking websites in our time. You know the ones - where you’re not really sure what you’re supposed to do when you get there, or which are so awful you leave immediately. First impressions are everything and it’s important to get the look, feel and navigation just right. We’ll work closely with you to find out what you like and what you don’t like so that we can ensure your website attracts and engages visitors the moment they arrive.
It’s true - the content on your website is one of the most important considerations. Not only is it important for telling your story, persuading and engaging. It’s also important for the search engines and helps Google (other search engines are available) to rank your site and include it in relevant site matches. Adding a blog to your website is a great way to communicate with your visitors and boost the content on your website, see our article 'The benefits of website blog' for more information and tips.
We build SEO (search engine optimisation) into your site right from the start. Why is that important? Well, without it your potential customers or visitors will not be able to find you. By optimising every page on your site, we get you listed higher in search engine results and make your site visible to people actively searching for your services.

There was a time when Facebook was used as a personal social communication platform. Now, it is being used by businesses everywhere to build communities of brand advocates who do a lot of their marketing for them...and for free! When you build a community online and keep your followers happy and engaged, they will shout from the rooftops about their positive experiences with your business, share your posts, like your pages and posts and really help to boost your online reputation.

Have you ever visited a Facebook business page only to find the owner hasn’t updated the page in months, or even years? Is the business still in operation? Is anybody visiting the page? Do they care about their business or their customers? This is a common problem on Facebook and one that could be losing those businesses valuable customers. By posting engaging, relevant and preferably, sharable content, you can keep your business in front of your Facebook audience and have a good chance of reaching out to new followers too. Think about the posts your followers might like to see. Advice on how to do something, competitions, interesting news, discount codes and special offers are just some of the posts you might like to include on your Facebook page. Always think about sharability and whether your audience would be likely to share your posts with other people.
When setting up or updating your Facebook page, try to view it as an extension of your website, if you have one. Many people forget to complete their Facebook profile properly and leave out important information like the services or products they offer, where they are based or their website address. You can include many of these details in the ‘About’ section, and Facebook also allows you to create your own additional pages. There is even the facility to create a storefront where you can showcase your products and services. Take a look at some of the big brand Facebook pages for inspiration and to see how they attract more business to their pages.
Written content is great, but images and video will really bring that content to life. Whether you are linking to a post on your blog, asking for customer feedback, announcing a special offer or promoting a product, images and video will really grab the viewer’s attention. Research has shown that including images in a Facebook post can generate as many as 52% more likes than a post that consists of text. This is great news for your brand exposure as those likes will appear on every liker’s timeline. You might even want to consider hiring a video production or design team to create some branded images and video for you. This is an investment that could go on generating revenue for you for many years.
Want to know what your followers really think about your business? Want to know what they had for breakfast this morning, or what car they drive? Polls are a great way to obtain feedback from your followers - feedback that could help you tailor your services to suit their needs or release offers they would be interested in receiving. Polls get people thinking and talking, and the best thing is that they only need to click a button in order to give their opinion - that’s convenient for them and a quick win for you. Facebook makes polls very easy to set up and they could be just the thing your business needs to meet your customers’ expectations.
Everybody loves a competition, especially if there is a prize to be won or the promise of their name up in lights if they win. Caption competitions on Facebook are very popular and for good reason. These really get people talking and interacting and they could work wonders for your brand.
Here are some other ways you can interact with your followers:

Twitter is a great way to promote your business and it's amazing how effective a tweet can be for exposing your brand and attracting more followers. You might only have 140 characters to work with, but this shouldn't limit your creativity or marketing ideas. Here are some ways you can really make Twitter work for you in 2015 and beyond.
When you tweet regularly, you show that your business is active and healthy. A stagnant Twitter account is one that will go unnoticed and which won't do your online reputation any favours. The thing to remember about Twitter is that it is fast moving and you only have a short time frame in which to engage with your target audience before they are distracted by the next tweet in their feed.
Here are some interesting figures: The average lifespan of a blog post is 2-3 years, the average lifespan of a Facebook post is 3 hours and the average lifespan for a tweet is around 2 hours, but it's probably closer to a few minutes depending on how many people your followers are following.
With this in mind, keep tweets to the point, relevant and keep them regularly updated. Link back to your website, link back to other relevant sites that you think your audience may be interested in or simply post photos and videos. Twitter is also a great place to announce special offers as these can usually be showcased in 140 characters or less.
You can often reuse the same tweet as not all your followers will see it the first time. Using a service like Hootsuite is a great way to schedule your posts for the coming week and it can also be used to manage all your social media sites like Facebook and LinkedIn.
Your Twitter account might be the first contact people have with your business, so make that first impression count. Keep your Twitter bio updated with your company details, your contact information, relevant information about your brand, products and services, and any other information you feel might be relevant. You can also update your profile description with interesting info about your business and really give your company some personality and identity. Another great way to add personality and make your account stand out is to brand your Twitter account as much as possible. Use your branding colours, logos and taglines where possible to make it clear to followers and potential followers who you are.
Can't think of anything to tweet today? Like what you see on another Twitter feed? Retweet it! If it's relevant to your brand, products or services, retweeting an engaging comment or photo is a great way to keep your Twitter feed fresh and also to build relationships and kudos with other like minded people within your industry. You should also aim to encourage others to retweet your content. This is a great way of extending your reach beyond your own Twitter community and attracting more business. If anybody retweets your posts, and especially potential customers or existing customers, make a point to thank them personally. By posting your own tweets and retweeting good quality tweets from others, you will start to become an expert in your industry and one that is more likely to attract more attention from potential leads.
Hashtags are a great way to decipher what is hot right now, and also what is not. There are many websites that can show you which hashtags are the most popular and which might be relevant to your brand. By posting relevant posts to hashtags, you can reach out to those who are interested in that particular trend right now, or who might be more receptive to hearing from you. Just keep in mind that hashtag popularity can change like the wind and that it is a good idea to keep checking hashtag trending websites for the latest news. If you can't find any relevant hashtags, why not start your own? Every hashtag starts somewhere, and you might just create the next big trend!
Okay, so you only have 140 characters to play with. Sometimes, this can be a challenge. Why not use video or images instead or in combination with text? This type of media is a great way to add colour and interest to your Twitter feed and could work wonders where exposure is concerned. A funny pic of the day, a caption competition or an instructional video are all great ways to get noticed, and encourage those all important retweets. Research has also shown that photos and video could encourage three to four more clicks on your Twitter account than a text-based tweet.

Like the dashboard on your car can tell you many things about vehicle performance and problems, Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools can give you the same insights into how your website is working. This free and very useful set of tools can show you how much traffic is reaching your website, where it is coming from and even how long visitors have been viewing your website. Monitoring your traffic regularly can help you to identify how your website is working and whether any improvements or adjustments need to be made.
Search engine optimisation, or SEO as it is also commonly called, is the process of optimising your web pages so that they can be found easily by Google. You can do this in a variety of different ways, but there are certain rules you will need to follow. Google is updating its search algorithms all of the time and if you break their best practice rules for optimisation, you may find that your website is penalised.
Each page has a set of attributes that can be optimised. These attributes are mostly set within the HTML code of each page, but many platforms such as Joomla and Wordpress have optimisation tools you can use that don't require you to know HTML. Heading tags, links, image alt tags and descriptions are just some of the ways you can optimise your page using keywords and key phrases. You can also optimise the content on each page by using keywords. It all counts towards your Google ranking.
You can research your website keywords using Google's Adwords Keyword Tool.
Keywords are a fantastic way to bring more traffic to your website, but they have to be used in the right way. Keyword density is the percentage of times that a particular keyword is used on your web page compared to the total amount of words on the page. When a user types a search into Google, they will often use a keyword, for example 'website design'. Google will then look for websites using matching keywords within their pages and bring those results back to the user.
Beware of using too many keywords. You could have your website or web pages penalised by Google as a result. Keyword stuffing is the practice of using too many of the same keywords on one page. We recommend that you use a keyword density of between 1 - 3% for optimum results.
Backlinks are links on other websites that point to your website. The days of stuffing pages with backlinks are over. Google got wise to this practice quite a while ago. Instead, you will need to use some cunning, but very effective ways to get traffic back to your website. It's all about quality over quantity these days, and below you will find some good pointers on how to create good quality backlinks.
Let's face it, nobody likes spam. It dominates our inboxes, wastes our time and unless you have a good spam filter on your mailbox, it can be a pain to manage. With this in mind, you should always be careful of using spamming techniques on your website or any other digital marketing tool you use. Before writing a new landing page, web page, blog post, email or social media post, think about whether you would see it as spam or something your audience will find useful. If it's the former, it's probably best to discard it and try a different approach.
The first step to running a business online is to build a website. The second is to promote it! There are many ways you can do this, and digital marketing methods are changing and improving all of the time. Take a look at our guide to find out how you can get your website to the top of Google's search results and in front of more people fast.
Your website address is very often the first thing a potential customer comes into contact with when viewing or looking up your business. By making it clear from your website address what you have to offer, you will experience more clicks, more visits and ultimately more sales. Try to choose a domain name that includes your service or product. For example, a window fitting company might choose www.southendwindows.co.uk, or www.essexglass.co.uk. We can also give you advice on the best domain name to choose and assist you with registering your domain name and hosting your website.

If you want to get your sales message or point across in a quick, meaningful and impactful way, promotional videos are a great idea. Videos help you to inject personality into your website and to engage with visitors instantly. Videos allow you to show product demos, instructional guides and much more and they could help you to boost sales and conversions. In fact, recent research from market research firm InternetRetailer says that consumers could be 85% more likely to purchase a product after watching a video.

You may have heard the phrase 'content is king', and it really is! Not only can content help you to explain your brand, your products and services, but it can also make you an authority in your field. When you become an authority (the go to place for particular information), you gain visitor and customer trust and this can only be good for your business. A blog, updated regularly, can help you to build content on your site, improve search engine rankings and give you content to share over a number of different channels, including social media.
Whether you are a local or national company or organisation, search directories should be your friend. By adding your website and information about your business to these directories, you can reach out to a wider audience and ensure you are found and seen in more places. Yelp, TripAdvisor and Google Places are all good examples of the directories you should be targeting. We can help you to identify the best directories to suit your business and your target audience.
If you are already using social media to promote your products and services, that's great! Now let's take that one step further by adding a live feed to your website. This is a great way to add content, and display your latest submissions to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms on your website. Adding a feed is easy and you can have as many on your website as you like - perfect if you are engaging with your target audience across different social media platforms.
If search engine ranking is important to your business a good tip is not to hide your services under a generic 'Services' tab. This site is a good example of how this could be done, the key services that Sound Advice offer have their own page and the services are all listed at the top navigation level.
This responsive website has been designed and built for Sound Advice an Audio Visual company based in Brentwood.
The site is fully responsive for both tablets and smart phones. It also features an interactive promotional area on the home page of the site.

Just when you thought all the best website addresses were taken, there are now more than 1,300 new generic top level domains to choose from. These names are currently being released onto the market, and we could be delighted to help you choose the perfect gTLD to complement your existing website or to use to build a new website.
The term 'generic top level domain', or gTLD, as it is also known, is really just a fancy industry term for the suffix that follows a website address, for example .com or .co.uk. The problem today is that many domain names using these suffixes are already taken, and this means new businesses are restricted to choosing names that may not reflect their company name or type of business. The good news is that the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (they control and maintain domain name publication) is releasing hundreds of new generic top level domains into the public domain. No longer are you confined to choosing a .com, .co.uk or .org domain name. You can now choose exciting domains ending with .london, tech, and even .food! Just think about the possibilities for your business.
These domains are being released right now and registering a new domain name really couldn't be easier. We can help you to choose from the hundreds of domains on offer and with everything from domain hosting to website design and optimisation.
There are many reasons why a new or existing business or organisation might want to register a new gTLD. Here are just some of them, and we would be delighted to answer any further questions you may have:
It only costs a few pounds to register a new gLTD so why not get in before your competitors to register a memorable and sought after domain name that could really take your business further? If you have an existing website, you don't necessarily need to create a new website to accommodate your new gTLD. We can forward your new domain name to your existing website very easily.
If you are thinking about opting for one of the new gTLDs, you might be thinking that it will have a positive effect on your search engine rankings. Unfortunately, Google won't show preference to a gTLD unless it is optimised in the usual way, but choosing a gTLD could still be very beneficial to your business. These domain names are going to be snapped up very fast and grabbing one today could help you to create a more memorable presence online and capture lots more business. Any domain name, or more specifically website can be optimised to bring you more traffic and ultimately more business. Speak to us today to find out more about the new gLTDs and how you can choose a domain name that will really take your business places.
There are too many gTLDs for us to list here, but we think you will have a lot of fun selecting the right one for your business. Here are just some ideas to get you started:

Search engine optimisation, or SEO as it is also commonly known, is the process of optimising each page on your website so that it can be easily found by Google. There are many ways you can do this, but one of the most effective ways is to use keywords throughout your pages that reflect the services or products you have to offer. This will help Google to return relevant results to users and get you higher up in the search engine rankings than you thought possible.
Here are five tips to improve your websites SEO.
Keywords are essential if you want your website to rank well on Google, whether you are using paid advertising or organic search engine optimisation. Google offers a keyword research tool called Adwords that allows you to find the most relevant and popular keywords for your products, services or industry. Not only can you see the most popular keywords, but you can also see how many people searched recently using those keywords. This can really help you to understand how your potential customers are searching for services or products like yours. Once you have defined which keywords can be used for your business or organisation, you can start using them within your content and also the meta data on each page. It is also a good idea to give your pages the same names as the keywords you select - it all helps when it comes to search engine rankings. When optimised in the right way, your keyword rich content can really start to bring in more traffic and turn those visits into conversions. Use the Google Adwords tool here.
Once you have found a good set of keywords to work with, it's time to put them to work. You can do this by writing content that includes these keywords. We recommend a keyword density (that's the ratio of keywords to normal text on the page) of between 1 and 3%. This will make your copy appear natural to human eyes, and also to Google. In addition to including your keywords in your content, place them within the headings of your pages and also link them to other pages on your site. You should also include them in the meta data of your pages- your meta description, h1 and h2 headings etc. We can help you with these areas if you don't have any experience in search engine optimisation.
If you offer a range of services, don't hide them away by placing individual service pages under a generic 'Services' tab. Instead, bring them up a level so that it is clear to your visitors what you have to offer. A website that is easy to understand and easy to navigate will be welcomed by your visitors and will help them to make a quick decision on whether to use your services. Very often, you only have a few seconds to make a lasting first impression with your website, and navigation and layout are important. Try to link your pages to other pages as much as possible so that you draw visitors deeper into your website. Include a strong call to action on each page too, including a compelling reason why customers should use your company and how they can get in touch with you.
One of the most important rules of writing copy for the web is that it must be unique - that is, you cannot copy content from another website and make it your own. Google looks unfavourably at duplicate content and you will find that the ranking of your website will suffer dramatically if you use any on your pages. It is also important to make your content relevant to your target audience. Give them useful information about your company, products or services, tell them why you are better than the rest and give them clear ways to get in touch with you. Keeping your content fresh and frequent can also work wonders for your search engine ranking, so why not include a blog on your website? Here you can really put your keywords to work for you and give your target audience a reason to keep coming back or to bookmark your website.
You could talk about all of the services you provide on just one page, but if you really want to optimise your website, an individual page for each service can really help. This is because you get another chance to use those keywords to good effect, and also make it clear to your customers what you do. Customers may only be looking for one of your services and by offering them a dedicated page that relates to and which is optimised for that service, you can help them to find you easily. You can also include town names on your services pages to help the process even more. Many people will enter a search such as 'car repairs in Southend' and so it makes sense to include some geographical keywords within your content too.

Phuse have recently developed a new brand identity for Park View, a wedding venue and function rooms located in Chalkwell Park.
Taking inspiration from the resident park peacocks we have created a striking logo that will be used across signage, website and promotional material. The addition of a repeated 'wallpaper' of peacocks in the background helps lift the logo and gives it a 3D feel.
The logo works across two brand colours at present; black and burgundy, shown below. Lighter colours are planned for promotions in the summer months.

Shoppingbraintree.co.uk is a brand new website designed and built by Phuse Media for Braintree Council. The new website is funded by the Mary Portas pilot project which is targeted at the regeneration of town centres. The aim of the site is to give shoppers, residents and visitors to Braintree a place to browse all the shops and businesses available in the town, search for current and upcoming news and events held within the town, and also access discounts available in local shops through the Indi Card scheme.
As part of the development Phuse built an interactive map/business directory for visitors to see the locations of shops before visiting the town. Local business can submit a business directory listing through the website via a form. Businesses can also submit special offers via a form that once approved will appear on the Indi Card listings page. News and events can also be submitted through the site by any interested parties.
The screen shot below shows the Shopping Braintree home page.

A new website development for Lavaux Capital, a trade finance and investment company based in Switzerland.
Phuse worked closely with Lavaux to understand their business and to translate this into a clear and logical website structure.
It was important for Lavaux that their trade finance and investment services were conveyed in plain Engish and with the help of our expert financial copywriter this was achieved.

Phuse were commissioned to produce an interactive film that would engage visitors and give them an exciting way to enjoy and appreciate art. The fairy-tale story takes place in the Tate Modern and centres around Degas' famous sculpture 'The Little Dancer'. Using a number of cutting edge interactive processes and Martin Percy's exquisitely shot video, Phuse create a completely interactive experience taking users on a journey through the gallery. Users interact throughout the film, solving puzzles and exploring some mysterious locations along the way in order to unlock the many secrets behind the intriguing sculpture. The website was nominated for a Webby Award in 2010 in the category of 'Best Use of Interactive Video'.
The brief was to create an interactive video based game that used the space in the newly decontaminated oil storage area at the Tate Modern. The aim was to show people in a fun and engaging way the areas that will soon be opened up to the public before said areas are renovated. The creative director created a story based around Degas' famous Little Dancer sculpture, which comes to life and leads a new security guard on a journey around the site.
During the game key decisions need to be made by the player. Clues are uncovered and puzzles solved leading the user to a magical finale in the main oil tank. As part of a large development we were tasked with taking all the video footage and developing a Flash environment to show the footage linked by some simple games.
Our approach to this project, as with many projects that have many people needing to approve or have input, is to modularize all the component parts. This allows us to be flexible and respond to change quickly without needing to rebuild from scratch each time. This way of working allows us to great prices even on bespoke work.
Below are the modules we created in order to pull this project together.
We decided to develop a completely non-linear video engine that is triggered via hotspots on the screen giving the user freedom to navigate around the virtual environment of the hundreds of short clips as if they were one seamless video.
To allow progress to the different levels of the game we created a number of mini games that related to the story.
As the game moves towards a climax there is a section where the user navigates around an area using the interactive video engine. Added to this is a treasure hunt style game where items are placed in the space and discovered zooming in to the detail on a certain clip.

Phuse have just been awarded the contract to develop a website for the enigmatic Lord Bath of Longleat. The pitching process involved the presentation of a number of home page design concepts for the website which can be seen below.
The new website which is currently under development will replace the current site www.lordbath.com (it's quite fun getting lost in this site!) and will feature galleries of Lord Bath's artwork, excerpts of his songs and poetry and his autobiography 'Strictly Private'.
We will also be going on location at Longleat in the next few weeks to do some 360 degree photography of the murals in Lord Bath's private apartments.
This design concept was the one chosen by the client. For the home page it uses a striking photomontage of Lord Bath in front of Longleat, the style and colour of the photo gives the design a ethereal feel which we think perfectly represents Lord Bath and his work.
The interior or content pages of the site were designed to put the mural artwork of Lord Bath centre stage, giving the visual impression that you were standing in front of them. The actual design aspects of the page have been toned down to give maximum impact to the full screen photos.
These two designs were favourites of ours. Lord Bath can be easily recognised by his beard, long hair and love of kaleidoscope coloured clothes. The idea behind this concept was to portray this simply and graphically using a head shot silhouette and psychedelic colours for the hair, reminiscent of psychedelic concert posters of the 1960's but with a clean modern feel.
We presented two options of this concept one white and one black, we couldn't decide which one we liked best!
