Making a website that is both W3C AA accessible and also uses the latest browser technology is no mean feat. Add to that a cutting-edge modern design and it becomes harder still.

This was the brief set by Essex Outdoors and Essex County Council when we won the contract to develop a new website for www.essexoutdoors.com. They wanted a website that would appeal to teachers, head teachers, youth leaders, parents and students alike, a website that would allow Essex Outdoors to market their services in a clean and modern way using all the latest web technologies.

Essex OutdoorsEssex Outdoors

As a council funded business, they also had a duty to make the website accessible to all types of users; the site had to adhere to the W3C accessibility guidelines up to the AA level. These guidelines can be daunting and incredibly in-depth, fully accessible websites are also not known for being visually interesting. The challenge was to create something that satisfied both these requirements.

Phuse Media delivered a website that surpassed all the expectations of both Essex Outdoors and Essex County Council. The website is a showcase for how you can incorporate all the latest technologies, create a visually stunning website, adhere to the accessibility guidelines and give all visitors a user experience of the highest order.

What the client says...

Phuse Media have been the perfect choice as partners for our new website. From start to finish they have been professional, innovative & responsive, helping to refine and improve our original brief and accommodating our constant additional requirements! We couldn’t be happier with the final product, and would have no hesitation in recommending Phuse to other businesses and organisations.

Phuse have recently developed a new brand identity for Park View, a wedding venue and function rooms located in Chalkwell Park.

Taking inspiration from the resident park peacocks we have created a striking logo that will be used across signage, website and promotional material. The addition of a repeated 'wallpaper' of peacocks in the background helps lift the logo and gives it a 3D feel.

The logo works across two brand colours at present; black and burgundy, shown below. Lighter colours are planned for promotions in the summer months.

Shoppingbraintree.co.uk is a brand new website designed and built by Phuse Media for Braintree Council. The new website is funded by the Mary Portas pilot project which is targeted at the regeneration of town centres. The aim of the site is to give shoppers, residents and visitors to Braintree a place to browse all the shops and businesses available in the town, search for current and upcoming news and events held within the town, and also access discounts available in local shops through the Indi Card scheme.

As part of the development Phuse built an interactive map/business directory for visitors to see the locations of shops before visiting the town. Local business can submit a business directory listing through the website via a form. Businesses can also submit special offers via a form that once approved will appear on the Indi Card listings page. News and events can also be submitted through the site by any interested parties.

The Lick Library project included a number of goals that offered some interesting challenges and a chance to get involved with some great technology. Adobe Flash is considered by some to be in decline, this is not the case, it is still the powerhouse behind most video delivery systems on the internet and offers a level of control and finesse missing from HTML5.

Lick Library Media Player

The brief was to deliver a flexible player that could fulfill many roles on the Licklibrary website and be configured from the server.

The encrypted video streams are supplied by industry leading Akamai. We used the Open Video Player library supplied by Akaimai to handle the decryption. Om top of this base we wrote 10,000 lines of custom code to bring the project together.

Developed over nearly two year alongside a complete development if the main Lick Library site, this project illustrates our abilty to problem solve at the highest level.

Phuse were commissioned to produce an interactive film that would engage visitors and give them an exciting way to enjoy and appreciate art. The fairy-tale story takes place in the Tate Modern and centres around Degas' famous sculpture 'The Little Dancer'. Using a number of cutting edge interactive processes and Martin Percy's exquisitely shot video, Phuse create a completely interactive experience taking users on a journey through the gallery. Users interact throughout the film, solving puzzles and exploring some mysterious locations along the way in order to unlock the many secrets behind the intriguing sculpture. The website was nominated for a Webby Award in 2010 in the category of 'Best Use of Interactive Video'.

The brief

The brief was to create an interactive video based game that used the space in the newly decontaminated oil storage area at the Tate Modern. The aim was to show people in a fun and engaging way the areas that will soon be opened up to the public before said areas are renovated. The creative director created a story based around Degas' famous Little Dancer sculpture, which comes to life and leads a new security guard on a journey around the site.

The Secret Dancer

During the game key decisions need to be made by the player. Clues are uncovered and puzzles solved leading the user to a magical finale in the main oil tank. As part of a large development we were tasked with taking all the video footage and developing a Flash environment to show the footage linked by some simple games.

Our approach to this project, as with many projects that have many people needing to approve or have input, is to modularize all the component parts. This allows us to be flexible and respond to change quickly without needing to rebuild from scratch each time. This way of working allows us to great prices even on bespoke work.

Below are the modules we created in order to pull this project together.

Flash interactive video

We decided to develop a completely non-linear video engine that is triggered via hotspots on the screen giving the user freedom to navigate around the virtual environment of the hundreds of short clips as if they were one seamless video.

Flash interactive video

Flash puzzle games

To allow progress to the different levels of the game we created a number of mini games that related to the story.

Flash puzzle games

Treasure Hunt

As the game moves towards a climax there is a section where the user navigates around an area using the interactive video engine. Added to this is a treasure hunt style game where items are placed in the space and discovered zooming in to the detail on a certain clip.

Listen To This is a series of four connected talks that bring together musicians, writers and critics. Developed and presented by author Daryl Easlea and academic Andrew Branch and hosted by Metal Culture.

To publicise the event Phuse were asked to develop an identity and brand concept to be used across a number of different mediums. The final design can be seen below plus a number of alternatives that were also presented.

Single cover concept

This design concept was inspired by the album cover artwork of 'The Best of Blur' created by artist Julian Opie. Blur are one of the bands being covered in the series of talks so the connection here was relevant to the project. Instead of the four members of Blur we have four artists also discussed in the talks; Wilko Johnson, David Bowie, Pete Townshend and Jackie Wilson. The flyer is design to resemble an old vinyl single with the record half removed from the cover, the Listen To This logo is shown in the middle of the record. This was the design chosen by the client and has been produced initially as a die cut A5 flyer.

Listen To This - Final design
A number of different logos were also created as part of the design process, the chosen logo can be seen below right. This logo was conceived to resemble a 1960's record label logo.

Listen To This - Logos

Badge concept

This design was inspired the small band badges that have been popular for decades. The front cover below left has a different badge for each artist or band discussed in the talks. The Listen To This logo is also in the style of a badge.

LTT- Badge Concept

Album covers concept

This design plays with the typography of a number of famous album and single covers to produce an effective flyer. The typefaces have been carried through to the back cover create a logo.

LTT- Vinyl Covers Concept

Scrapbook montage concept

Reminiscent of scrapbook collages created in our teenage years this design brings together images of all the artists featured in the talks.

Phuse have just been awarded the contract to develop a website for the enigmatic Lord Bath of Longleat. The pitching process involved the presentation of a number of home page design concepts for the website which can be seen below.

The new website which is currently under development will replace the current site www.lordbath.com (it's quite fun getting lost in this site!) and will feature galleries of Lord Bath's artwork, excerpts of his songs and poetry and his autobiography 'Strictly Private'.

We will also be going on location at Longleat in the next few weeks to do some 360 degree photography of the murals in Lord Bath's private apartments.

Design concept 1

This design concept was the one chosen by the client. For the home page it uses a striking photomontage of Lord Bath in front of Longleat, the style and colour of the photo gives the design a ethereal feel which we think perfectly represents Lord Bath and his work.

Lord Bath concept 1A

The interior or content pages of the site were designed to put the mural artwork of Lord Bath centre stage, giving the visual impression that you were standing in front of them. The actual design aspects of the page have been toned down to give maximum impact to the full screen photos.

Design concept 2

These two designs were favourites of ours. Lord Bath can be easily recognised by his beard, long hair and love of kaleidoscope coloured clothes. The idea behind this concept was to portray this simply and graphically using a head shot silhouette and psychedelic colours for the hair, reminiscent of psychedelic concert posters of the 1960's but with a clean modern feel.

Lord Bath - Phuse Design 1
We presented two options of this concept one white and one black, we couldn't decide which one we liked best!
